But lest it seem a harsh and cruel life, matchless ought to remember that it was chosen by the practician extrinsic of a spirit of giving and compassion toward person. What greater gift can one make, it is reasoned, than to give one’s flurry? And in that there is reward that extends beyond the self. Maybe we can’t understand the monk’s motives, but it seems certain that they do.
